Tom Gobroski’s journey as a male breast cancer survivor and advocate for ABCD is a testament to his resilience, determination, and passion for helping others. Diagnosed in March 2015, Tom demonstrates the importance of early detection and the need for support in the face of breast cancer.

Tom’s discovery of a lump on his chest prompted him to seek medical attention. Despite initial reassurances from doctors, further testing revealed that the lump was cancerous. Tom underwent a mastectomy and subsequent treatments for breast cancer. However, his journey didn’t end there, as he also faced prostate cancer and developed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a bone marrow disorder.

Throughout his challenging experiences, Tom remained positive and determined to make a difference. He became involved with ABCD in 2016 to offer guidance and share his personal story with other men facing breast cancer. Tom understands the unique challenges and stigma associated with the disease in men. He recognizes the importance of creating a safe and comfortable space for men to discuss their experiences openly.

Tom’s commitment to giving back is evident. Despite the rarity of male breast cancer, Tom has been matched with several individuals. His empathetic and compassionate approach has made a significant impact on those he has mentored, helping them feel less embarrassed and more comfortable in their experiences. In addition to mentoring, Tom has actively participated in events and fundraisers to support breast cancer research and foster a sense of community among survivors.

Being a cancer survivor doesn’t guarantee immunity from future health setbacks. However, Tom’s determination and positive mindset have allowed him to face each challenge head-on. He wants others diagnosed with cancer to recognize the importance of a strong support system, and he encourages individuals to seek help, whether it be through family, friends, or support groups. Tom puts it simply, “this isn’t a great revelation, but it is so important that people have strong support during this time. I would encourage them, men, and women, to seek support like ABCD because it is not good to keep things bottled up.”

Through his involvement with ABCD, Tom has touched the lives of many, providing hope and guidance to men affected by breast cancer. His story serves as a reminder that raising awareness, fostering support, and offering mentorship can make a significant difference in the lives of those impacted by this disease. Tom’s impact extends beyond his personal experience with breast cancer, his advocacy and mentorship have empowered others to face their own challenges with courage and determination. Through his actions, he continues to inspire and instill hope, making a lasting impact in the fight against breast cancer.

Tom Gobroski was diagnosed in 2015 with Stage 0 DCIS ER+PR-HER2- opting for a unilateral mastectomy with hormonal therapy.
