Oliver Bogler, PhD, Joins ABCD Board as First Mentor Liaison

We’re proud to announce Oliver Bogler, PhD, has joined the ABCD Board of Directors as the first Mentor Liaison, a new role designed to ensure that Mentor perspectives are reflected in ABCD’s strategic planning.

As a Mentor and long-time advocate, Oliver brings both professional expertise and lived experience to this position. Over the course of his one-year term, he will bring the voice of our Mentor community into Board discussions and decision-making.

Oliver’s career spans decades of leadership in cancer research and training. Educated in England, he came to the United States for postdoctoral work and went on to hold faculty positions culminating at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he studied EGFR signaling in glioblastoma and served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. In 2020, he joined the National Cancer Institute as Director of the Center for Cancer Training, overseeing more than $200 million in fellowships and training grants.

In 2025, Oliver transitioned from government service to lead the Night Science Institute, a nonprofit dedicated to helping researchers embrace creativity in scientific thinking. He also supports scientists through life and career coaching and grant consulting.

In 2012, Oliver was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. He shared his experience at MaleBreastCancerBlog.org, mentored others with the diagnosis, and has been a vocal advocate for greater inclusivity in clinical research for the 1% of people with breast cancer who are men.

That perspective and personal connection to ABCD’s mission is what makes serving in this role so meaningful for Oliver.

“ABCD’s volunteer Mentors do something irreplaceable: they meet people in one of the hardest moments of their lives and say, ‘I’ve been there, and I’m here now,’” Oliver shared. “Representing them on the Board is both a privilege and a calling, and I look forward to the conversations ahead about how we continue to grow and deepen that mission.”

The creation of the Mentor Liaison Board role reflects ABCD’s continued commitment to grounding its work in lived experience. By formally bringing the Mentor voice to the Board, ABCD is strengthening the connection between the people it serves, the Mentors who make that support possible, and the strategic decisions that guide the organization’s future.
