ABCD’s 25th Anniversary Gala - After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Inspiring Hope and Transforming Lives for 25 Years

On Saturday, June 15 – the same day Emmy award-winning Milwaukee journalist Melodie Wilson Oldenburg founded ABCD in 1999 –more than 300 Mentors, Participants, donors, healthcare professionals, past and present leaders gathered together to commemorate ABCD’s tremendous impact on the lives of so many people impacted by breast cancer.

Emcee Joyce Garbaciak and Honorary Co-Chair David Lubar shared stories and honored Melodie’s remarkable legacy, while Executive Director Ellen Friebert Schupper presented the Power of One-to-One Award to the Oldenburg family, saying, "Because of the Oldenburg family’s ongoing commitment, more people than ever are getting critical emotional support from ABCD."

While accepting the award, Ryan Oldenburg, who is pictured here with Ellen, said, "What started as my mom answering unknown calls one at a time, and engaging with strangers to give them some reassurance, understanding, and hope, has grown and changed dramatically in the last 25 years. Communication, connection, even the understanding of breast cancer and treatment options has evolved, but the mission of ABCD remains the same – that ‘No one should go through breast cancer alone.’"

A poignant highlight of the evening was when ABCD Mentors Krista and Jessica, both living with metastatic disease, received a heartfelt standing ovation. This deeply moving moment came after the audience viewed a special video that not only shared their personal stories, but also illustrated the profound impact ABCD has had on their lives. The video resonated deeply with everyone present, showcasing the strength, resilience, and hope that Krista and Jessica embody, and underscoring the vital support provided by ABCD.

And we raised more than $460,000 in sponsorships, ticket sales, and night-of-event donations, so that ABCD can truly make a difference to anyone who needs us:
